The Love Story
From the moment that Mahri & Joe met, they instantly clicked. Their first date started at a restaurant of an art hotel and it somehow turned into seven straight hours of wandering from place to place, losing track of time, and chatting the night away. After two of those marathon dates, Mahri went on a trip, and when she got back, Joe picked her up from the airport. They've been inseparable ever since. A few years later, Joe teamed up with one of Mahri's friends to plan what she thought was a surprise birthday party. Plot twist! It was actually a sweet proposal surrounded by all of her family and friends. "It was emotional, joyful, and completely unforgettable," recalls Mahri & Joe.
The Planning Experience
They both always envisioned having a destination wedding, but they weren't sure they could get everyone in one place, so they decided to do both! First, they had a small family ceremony, then celebrated with all of their best friends at a destination wedding. It turned out to be the perfect mix for them. Sue Allen, their Certified Destination Wedding Specialist, sent them a few options in Costa Rica, and they immediately fell in love with Secrets Papagayo. It was the perfect balance of intimate, elegant, and easygoing, which is exactly what they wanted for their special celebration.
The Celebration
Their wedding day came together beautifully, with loved ones pitching in and adding personal touches throughout. From meaningful readings and rituals to creative ideas, every detail felt unique to their day. One of their close friends also happened to be a DJ, creating the perfect vibe and keeping everyone dancing all night long. "Every part of the night felt like it reflected our people and our story, which was exactly what we hoped for," recalls Mahri & Joe. They couldn't believe how many of their closest friends traveled to celebrate with them, and it turned out to be everything they dreamed of and more.
The Memories
To sum up their destination wedding experience, they describe it as "joyful, unforgettable, and connected." Before guests arrived, Mahri and Joe spent some one-on-one time soaking in the magic of Costa Rica. They enjoyed a short kayak tour, explored the resort, and fully took in the experience together. Once their loved ones arrived, it turned into a joyful reunion, filled with catching up, laughter, and time with people they hadn't seen in years.

Mahri & Joe's biggest piece of advice for couples planning a destination wedding?
"Take your time exploring options—look at things like cost, time of year, and travel logistics—but also trust your instincts.
