Stunning Georgian-styled churches with sweeping stairways and antique furnishings, along with stunning secluded beaches and beautiful summits, such as St. Peter Mountain, make St. Thomas weddings PERFECT.
First believed to be settled by the Arawak and Carib Indians in 2500 BC, St. Thomas is a haven for historical highlights, such as Blackbeard’s Castle, which was constructed in the 1600’s, and Fort Christian, which is situated on the water on the eastern side of Charlotte Amale Harbor and was thought to be constructed by the Danes in 1680.
Piracy in this region is said to have subsided by the late 1700’s and was replaced with legitimate trade, and, by 1848, slaves were set free. In 1917, the Danish West Indies, which was comprised of St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix islands, were bought by the United States for the sum of $25 million in gold. The islands were renamed the United States Virgin Islands. By 1936, the islands were able to govern themselves under the ‘Organic Act.’
Apart from the rich history and culture, those having St. Thomas weddings are also able to take advantage of the ‘Peter Greathouse Estate and Gardens,’ which are truly magnificent. A nature trail meanders through some 200 varieties of tropical plants and a beautiful orchid-filled jungle makes for a magical backdrop as you sip rum punch -- compliments of the botanical garden’s warm hospitality.
