The island's volcanic sands shade from gray-black in the north to a honey tint in the south. Frigate Bay and Friar's Bay on the
Caribbean both have powdery sand and sheltered waters. On the north or Atlantic side of the neck, waves run higher and the beaches
have a wilder feel. In fact, no road even reached the secluded beaches at the far end of the peninsula until just a few years ago.
Although St. Kitts may be mellow, there's still plenty to do. Fishing, sailing, windsurfing, snorkeling and scuba diving are excellent.
You can take a rainforest hike, even a trek to Mt. Liamuiga's dormant crater. The St.Kitts Scenic Railway Tour will welcome its first
passengers Oct. 10. The three-hour, 30-mile tour will use the same railways built in 1912 that delivered sugar cane from the plantation
fields to the sugar mill in the capital of Basseterre. Sites on the route include sugar estates, the ruins of slave barracks, the Brimstone
Hill Fortress built in 1690, Old Road Town where Thomas Jefferson's grandfather is buried and the island's rainforest.
Shopping isn't the first reason to go to St. Kitts, but if you enjoy browsing you'll do just fine. Duty-free shops tucked around the Circus
in Basseterre sell jewelry, perfume, china and crystal.
